One man is dead after a state parole officer shot him at a Denver home.

The shooting occurred about 9 p.m. Tuesday as the officer was checking on one of his parolees at a home near 17th and Emerson.

The officer recognized a wanted felony suspect and confronted the man, police spokesman Sonny Jackson said. Jackson said the suspect produced a gun and the officer fired.

The suspect was pronounced dead at Denver Health Medical Center.

No names have been released. One weapon was retrieved from the scene.

Department of Corrections spokeswoman Katherine Sanguinetti said Denver police will take the lead in the investigation, but said the DOC will follow up.
