One person has died and a baby was in critical condition after a car struck a minivan heading west in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 70.

The accident happened Monday afternoon in Grand Junction near the 24 Road exit.

Police said the driver of a Dodge Caravan traveled the wrong way through a roundabout and drove onto the interstate from an exit ramp.

The van headed west on eastbound I-70 for about three-fourths of a mile before an eastbound Chevrolet Monte Carlo struck it head-on.

The driver of the Monte Carlo was killed. The woman driving the van and a baby in the Monte Carlo suffered what police called "substantial" injuries.

No names have been released.

Emergency workers said the driver of the minivan had to be cut from the vehicle.
