GREELEY, Colo. -- Some graduates at the University of Northern Colorado are still waiting on their diplomas after their graduation ceremony came to an abrupt end over the weekend.Strong winds forced the school to cancel graduation mid-way through the ceremony.A few lucky students made it across the stage, but the majority were told to stand and be recognized. Then, the president dismissed the crowd.
It came as a disappointment to many students and their families.“It was very cold and it was kind of miserable,” said graduate Miranda Fundus. “But, I was disappointed because you paid $70 for a cap and gown and didn’t have your name announced. They should have canceled the speeches and allowed as many students to walk as possible.”At the ceremony, several men held down a large tent and stacks of diplomas. The wind threatened to topple everything that wasn’t anchored down."They just asked us to stand," said graduate Amber Wiedeman. "And then it was over. Everybody was cold and it was just a mad rush to get out of the stadium."The school did have a contingency plan to move the ceremony indoors, but that would have resulted in five separate ceremonies, and would have required 24 hours notice.“Once the wind threatened to take out our tent, safety became our immediate concern,” said UNC Dean of Students Samantha Ortiz Schriver. “We are disappointed as well."The school is now setting up photo ops for those graduates who would still like to have their picture taken with the president receiving their diploma.
