DENVER -- A Longmont high school student who pleaded guilty to stabbing a classmate in the back with scissors was sentenced Friday. The student, whose name is being withheld because of his age, pleaded guilty as a juvenile to felony criminal attempt to commit murder in the second degree, reported the Daily Camera. He will be sentenced to five years probation, cannot return to Silver Creek High School and will be home schooled.
The teen must also participate in a strict therapy regimen as well as wear an ankle monitor and stay away from the victim. On Jan. 31, the boy stabbed the girl with a pair of 10-inch-long scissors in the hallway as she was trying to get into her locker, police said. The girl tried to run away and police said the boy chased her, stabbing her in the back until she collapsed. She was treated for injuries. Police said her parents told the court during a sentencing hearing Friday that their daughter is working through emotional issues. The boy's defense attorney Keith Collins said the he suffers from a mental illness, which played a role in the stabbing."Dozens of different professionals concluded that this was an undiagnosed mental health issue," he told the Camera. "There was no way to know this was going to happen. It was its first manifestation."The "good news," Collins said, is that with therapy, "this won't happen again," he said.
