DENVER -- We may not know who the Democratic Presidential nominee will be, but some of the Colorado delegates to the summer convention have now been selected.Over the weekend some, but not all of Colorado’s congressional districts held votes for delegate seats to the national convention this summer at the Pepsi Center.Colorado has a total of 70 delegates, including 15 so-called superdelegates.
One of those regular delegates selected is Joe Beaver of Lakewood. He is board president of the Colorado Cross-Disability Coalition. Beaver told 7NEWS he was "elated" to be picked and acknowledged the competition for a coveted spot on the convention floor was intense.Beaver said he did not support one candidate over the other, but ran on a platform of long-term health care for people with disabilities.Beaver is confined to a wheelchair because of post-polio syndrome. He contracted polio when he was 6 years old and walked for most of his life with a cane.He said with the aging baby boomer population more and more people are going to need care and they want options other than nursing homes.Beaver said he has followed presidential politics since he was a young boy and never imagined that he would one day be a delegate to a national convention. He said when he heard the convention was coming to Denver he instantly thought about seeking a slot.
