ARVADA, Colo. -- A cat owner in Arvada said 5-year-old Sully survived two years roaming the family's neighborhood in Montana, but was killed by a coyote in less than six months in the northwest Denver suburbs, according to the Vail Daily newspaper.Jennifer Forker said her cat disappeared in early December. Two weeks later, a neighbor said they saw three coyotes eating Sully.
A 7NEWS producer's indoor cat snuck outside one night earlier this month. Within 48 hours, Broomfield animal control called to say "Max's" remains had been found in a small open space area at the end of the block. The cat had been killed by wildlife, likely a coyote or fox.Animal control returned the remains, but said they were unviewable. The Web site Craigslist has a posting from someone who found another cat's remains in Broomfield and wanted to let the owner know the remains were given to animal control. That cat apparently was killed by a coyote or fox. The poster on the Web site just wanted to let the family know in case they were looking for their cat.The Vail Daily also reported that Pam Morrison in Boulder was walking her dog in the daylight hours when her Siberian husky, Jack, spotted a coyote. Jack chased the coyote until it saw the coyote had company, four other coyotes were with it.Jack was not hurt.As large as a medium-size dog, coyotes can scale a 6-foot fence. The newspaper said the best away to keep coyotes away: Scare or threaten coyotes with loud noises and bright lights. Pick up small objects, such as tennis balls, and throw them at the coyote. Coyotes will raid open trash and compost piles. Secure your garbage in tough plastic containers with tight-fitting lids, and keep it in a secure building when possible. Take out trash the morning that pickup is scheduled, not the previous night. Don’t feed or try to pet coyotes. Feeding, whether direct or indirect, may lead to bold behavior. Feed pets indoors. Keep bird-feeding areas clean. Remove feeders if coyotes are regularly seen around your yard. Close off crawl spaces under porches and sheds. Coyotes use such areas for resting and raising young.
