Honoring Fallen Firefighters

Names Added To Lakewood Fallen Firefighters Memorial

There are 131 names on Lakewood's Fallen Firefighters Memorial and after Saturday's ceremonies four more found themselves on the wall.

Capt. Shane Stewart, an Ault-Pierce volunteer firefighter, died Feb. 23, 2008, in an accident while on his way to an emergency call.

After that, three others died on a day when the state saw two devastating wildfires. One of those wildfires was in Ordway, the other near Fort Carson.

Those men are Chief Terry DeVore, an Olney Springs volunteer firefighter. Firefighter John Schwartz was also an Olney Springs volunteer firefighter.

Pilot Gert Marais died when his single-engine air tanker crashed while fighting one of those brush fires.

At the ceremony, the question, "What is a fireman?" was asked.

"They place the safety and well being of others ahead of their own," said Peter Weir, executive director of the Colorado Division of Fire Safety.

Doves were released at the ceremony following the ringing of bells to mark the firefighters' passing.

Stewart's family said it was an honor to attend the ceremony and celebrate Shane's life.
