Extraterrestrial Affairs Commission Could Be On Ballot

Denver City Councilman Concerned About Cost

If space aliens landed in Denver's City Park, would the city's first responders be ready?

It may sound far-out, but it was one of the issues addressed Thursday in the review and comment meeting for the Extraterrestrial Affairs Commission ballot initiative.

Denver Resident Jeff Peckman firmly believes we are not alone.

"The evidence is irrefutable that there are extraterrestrials that have visited earth frequently," said Peckman, who believes the government is covering up encounters.

Peckman is sponsoring a ballot initiative that would created an Extraterrestrial Affairs Commission to collect information about aliens and how we can peacefully co-exist.

While Denver City Councilman Charlie Brown said the "Alien Initiative" provides comic relief, he is concerned about the proposed $75,000 budget.

"This will be on Leno," said Brown. "There are more serious needs than setting up an 18-member commission to study men from Mars."

Brown is also concerned about Denver’s image after Peckman gets the 3,900 signatures needed to put the initiative to a vote of the people.

"I think it's too easy to get initiatives on the ballot, and I think we should look at it as a council," said Brown.

The United States government would be the governing authority in case of extra-terrestrial contact, superseding local authorities.

Brown is well aware that this initiative is no joke.

Five years ago, Peckman sponsored an initiative that would have required the city to implement stress-reduction techniques. He collected enough signatures to get it on the ballot, although voters failed to pass it.

Peckman said he hopes a city commission will set an example for government at other levels.

"We're already well on the way, culturally, to accepting the reality (of alien life), and this is a way to accelerate that," said Peckman.

He also promised that a press conference in the coming weeks will show clear evidence of close encounters.
