EAGLE COUNTY, Colo. -- The pilot of a small vintage plane was able to walk away after it crashed in a wooded area north of Wolcott in Eagle County Monday morning.

The single-engine North American T-6 WWII plane went down in an remote area, close to State Bridge, about 10 miles north of Wolcott, according to the sheriff's office.

Pilot John Zayac, 48, of Englewood, Colo. walked away from the crash with a few minor cuts and scrapes and was able to call 911. He was the only person on board the aircraft.

The plane left Centennial Airport Monday morning, en route to Reno, Nev., where Zayac planned to sell his military aircraft. Centennial's flight tower called Vail Dispatch when they believed the plane had crashed, at about 11 a.m.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

The two-seat T-6 planes were used primarily as trainers.
