BASSETT, Va. -- Police were searching Thursday for a
9-year-old girl after finding her parents shot to death at their
home in western Virginia.
Authorities initially thought Jennifer Renee Short (pictured, left) ran away
during the shootings, but they are searching for her now on the
presumption she was abducted, Henry County Sheriff's Capt. Kimmy
Nester said.
Authorities issued an Amber Alert, relaying information about
the case to television and radio stations in the hope of finding a
lead in the case.
The bodies of Michael Short, 50, and Mary Short, 36, were found
in their home 35 miles south of Roanoke, Franklin County Sheriff W.
Quint Overton said.
Michael Short was found in an enclosed carport and his wife was
found in a bedroom. Both were shot once in the head, and
investigators said evidence seemed to rule out a murder-suicide.
Investigators said the family was seen alive last night. A co-worker of Michael Short discovered the bodies Thursday morning.
The Sheriff's Office called out helicopters to aid in the search for the missing girl.
The Henry County, Va., Sheriff's Office asked anyone who may have seen the girl to call (276) 638-8751. Crimestoppers offered a $1,000 reward for substantial information about the crime.
