Plane Overshoots Runway

No Damage Reported To MD 80

An Allegiant Air flight overshot the runway at Fort Collins/Loveland Airport Sunday afternoon but no one was hurt.

The front wheel of the MD 80 went off the runway while landing, Airport Manager David Gordon told the Fort Collins Coloradoan.

The runway was shut down while the plane was pushed back onto the runway. The plane was not damaged.

"Looks like the plane came in fast. He just overshot the runway," Gordon said.

The plane's front wheel ended about 10 feet past the pavement, an Allegiant Air spokeswoman said.

At first, the pilot tried backing up but they were stuck.

"It was kind of hilarious, actually, when it was happening," said Kamy Diederich, of Loveland. "We were like, 'Oh, that's funny. Let's just reverse. It's going to be great.' An hour later, we're still sitting on the plane waiting for buses."

The 149 passengers on board the plane had to wait for about an hour to get on buses back to the terminal.

Passengers said the flight from Las Vegas was smooth and even the landing was uneventful, until she could smell the rubber on the brakes burning.

"The landing was really great until we all almost crashed up against the seat in front of us," Diederich said.

"You wouldn't have even known there was a problem unless you looked out the window and saw you were at the end of runway," another passenger said.

Gordon said it was too early to know why the pilot overshot the runway.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating.

"We had such a lucky trip. We won money, had fun, but no, nothing always goes good. Something always goes bad," Diederich said.

The same jet and the same pilot then took off several hours later and landed without problems in Las Vegas.

The Fort Collins Loveland Airport has four flights a week to Vegas. The jet involved is the largest plane that can land at the airport.

It's not the first time a plane has run out of runway at that airport but airport officials say the last time was a few years ago and that it actually skidded off because of an ice storm.
