Jesus Run Organizers Accused Of Not Running Race Properly

Winner Says He Was Never Paid

POSTED: 1:28 p.m. MDT August 14, 2002

Marathon races, half marathons, 10Ks, 5Ks and fun runs are popular events in Colorado but organizers of one running race have left top runners gasping for breath.

The event was called Jesus Run and organizers said the goal was to support Christian ministries around the world.

But one world-class athlete says the devil was in the details.

Benjamin Gailey is a runner, an elite marathoner.

Last June, he raced in what was called the Jesus Run. Gailey says that organizers first downsized the course.

"The race has changed, that it was a certified course but now it's 12 miles instead of a half marathon. They're claiming 12 miles and not 13," Gailey says.

So he can't get credit for running and he says many of the winners have never seen their prize money.

In his case, he took second place. That's $500.

"I actually questioned them when they denied giving it to us, where it was and when we going to get it. I was assured it would be mailed to me within one week. it was not," Gailey said.

First, the race director said someone stole the money and plaques. Then he said several sponsors didn't pay up and that's why there's no money.

Then Jesus Run Ministries told Call 7 for Help the media are to blame for not covering the event.

"I find that kind of asinine. I think that's an illegitimate excuse. A race speaks for itself if it brings out athletes and it's well organized. That's there's media coverage, that it has sponsorship, that's what bring the people.

Jesus Run Ministries has laid off its paid staff and it doesn't look like Gailey will ever get his prize money.

But Jesus Run ministries -- out of Highlands Ranch -- is taking donations for another race to be held in Israel -- this winter.

It's asking runners and volunteers to kick in nearly $30 a month to help keep the run alive.
