A federal investigator will look into the workplace death of a Denver man who was killed while helping demolish a school building in Aspen.

Juan Ruiz, 29, died from massive head trauma Wednesday when blocks from a free-standing cinder-block wall fell on him.

The incident happened at about 9:20 a.m. at the old Aspen Middle School, 135 High School Road. Ruiz was rushed to Aspen Valley Hospital and died at noon.

According to the Pitkin County Sheriff's Office, Ruiz was working next to his brother on the third floor of the school when the 10-foot-high wall fell on him.

The Occupational Health and Safety Administration was sending an investigator to Aspen.

The old middle school is next to the new middle school that replaced it.
