DENVER -- A former soldier is behind bars for allegedly stealing explosives while he was stationed at Fort Carson, Colo.
Shaun Terry, 22, has been arrested in Town Creek, Ala.
According to a criminal complaint filed Monday, FBI agents were tipped off by an informant who said Terry allegedly stole eight blocks of C-4 explosives, a claymore mine, and other explosives while he was stationed at Fort Carson in Colorado.
The informant said that Terry traded some of the explosives to pay off drug dealers.
The suspect is being held in Alabama and faces numerous federal charges.
According to the affidavit, Terry was a combat engineer when he allegedly took several blocks of C-4, a claymore mine, a detonator, a number of blasting caps and a detonation cord.
Terry allegedly told the informant that after Sept. 11, things were so hectic at the base that no one noticed when, following an exercise, he hid the the items in his jacket, buried them and later retrieved them.
When he moved to Alabama in October, Terry took the items with him, the informant said.
Three weeks ago, the suspect was beaten up by drug dealers when they discovered that he had allegedly stolen 70 pounds of marijuana, the affidavit said. Because the suspect was unable to return all of the marijuana, he made up for it by giving the drug dealers some of the explosives, the informant said.
The informant said that is when he/she contacted authorities about Terry's behavior.
Agents say one block of the C-4 was recovered from Terry's home in Town Creek, but they are worried about what happened to the rest of the explosives.
Terry was discharged from the Army at Fort Carson in February.
