Peggy Hettrick's gold bracelet
Greg Campbell/Fort Collins Now
This gold bracelet, which was worn by Peggy Hettrick when she was murdered in 1987 may still contain her killer's DNA. It was presumed missing for years. In fact, her brother had it all along.

A family heirloom may help find the person who killed Peggy Hettrick more than 20 years ago, according to the Fort Collins Now.

The newspaper is reporting that attorneys have been looking for the bracelet since 2006 to test it for DNA evidence. Hettrick was killed in February 1987 in Fort Collins.

Tim Masters served more than nine years for the murder. He was released from prison earlier this year after District Attorney Larry R. Abrahamson dismissed all charges against him.

The dismissal was based on "newly discovered evidence that justifies further investigation, namely DNA test results, which were not available at the time of Peggy Hettrick's murder in 1987, nor at the time of Timothy Master's original trial and conviction in 1999," Abrahamson said.

Hettrick's brother has the wanted bracelet, a wide gold band with intricate etched designs that was bought in North Africa by their mother and passed down after her death to Peggy, according to Greeley Tribune.

The brother, Tom Hettrick, told the newspaper he is willing to give the bracelet to investigators if it could help identify his sister's killer.
