BRECKENRIDGE, Colo. -- An English springer spaniel that had been missing since a Breckenridge building exploded on April 19 was found alive Sunday, buried in the rubble, her injured owner said. The dog, named Lulu, was uncovered in the rubble by the owner of the building, Brian Holt, with Good Times Adventures. Holt said he heard a whimper while going through the wrecked building."We turned off the radio and started calling out Lulu's name. Then we heard some yelping," Holt told the Summit Daily News.
The dog belongs to Good Times employee Brian Mislansky, who was trapped and injured in the explosion. It took Lulu's rescuers nearly an hour to dig down to her. The dog was huddled 15 feet down, in a crawl space."She basically had a two-story building on top of her," Holt told the newspaper.Lulu was checked by a veterinarian who said she was remarkably well, suffering only mild dehydration and some trauma to her left eye."She was just standing there wagging her tail and hanging out with the girls that brought her in," veterinarian Christine Murphy told 7NEWS, of seeing Lulu for the first time. She believes Lulu probably survived by drinking melting snow and eating food she found in the debris."She had to have had water because after eight days, I don't think she could have survived without water. She probably could have survived without food but she wouldn't have been in as good a condition as she was in," Murphy said.Mislansky is still hospitalized at St. Anthony Hospital as a result of his injuries but friends were able to convince hospital officials in Denver to let him see his dog on Monday. Mislansky told 7NEWS that the visit certainly lifted his spirits.Mislansky has been moved out of the intensive care unit and is slowly recovering. He has another surgery scheduled for Tuesday evening. He said Lulu is staying with his friends in Summit County while he recovers."There has been a guardian angel over both Brian and the dog, and now they are reunited," said Holt. The cause of the explosion remains under investigation. Holt said investigators are picking through the rubble by hand to find any clues as to what caused the explosion. Good Times Adventures offers snowmobile and sled-dog tours in Summit County.Milansky is a van driver for the business. He was pulled out of the rubble four hours after the explosion. He and his dog were the only two in the building when it was flattened. Read more in the Summit Daily News.
