ASPEN, Colo. -- Bears are starting to come out of hibernation in Colorado's high country and some are getting into trouble. This week, one bear was hit and killed, likely after it had gone foraging in a nearby landfill.Another bear broke through a glass door in a Mountain Valley home, according to the Aspen Times.
Officials said the door was locked, but the bear kept working it until it popped open around 2:30 a.m.Randy Hampton with the Colorado Division of Wildlife told 7NEWS, "it's not uncommon for them [bears] to smash doors."Someone was home when the bear got in and they were able to scare it away. The DOW has set up a trap to catch the bear. The bear that was hit and killed in Snowmass Canyon was found near the Pitkin County landfill.Officials think the bear may have been foraging for food in the landfill.Hampton reminded "people who have vacation homes, second homes in the mountains or people who just plan to head for the hills need to be responsible. Take care of your trash, don't put trash out the night before pick up and don't feed pets outside."Hampton also said "bird feeders turn into bear attractant" and their recommendation is don't put them out.Read more about these bear incidents in the Aspen Times.
