What Happens To Watering Complaints?

Aurora Water Monitors Stay Busy

POSTED: 5:15 p.m. MDT August 6, 2002

Circle, diamond, square.

Some people are thumbing their noses at the every-third-day watering restrictions brought on by the drought.

One homeowner is angry that his city didn't take action quick enough.

Pat, from Aurora, said he contacted the city's over-usage complaint line because he said his neighbor's water was hitting the driveway and sidewalk.

Pat said it went on for 2 1/2 hours before anyone from Aurora arrived. And by then, the neighbor had shut off the water.

So pat e-mailed Call 7 For Help wanting to know why the city has a complaint line if nothing can be done. period, not question mark

Aurora said it has just seven water monitors working on a rotating schedule and they are very busy.

"What we do is we monitor reports of watering on the wrong days, or wasting water, or broken sprinklers, and we've seen a dramatic drop since program went into place," said Peter Binney, the Aurora utilities director

A homeowner has to be caught in the act of watering on the wrong day before the city will issue a notice or fine, he said.

Call 7 For Help gets quite a few e-mails from people who complain about watering violations all over the Denver metro area. But, in Aurora , it appears that more than 99 percent of residents are in compliance with watering restrictions.
