Should police officers have rules on what they may post on MySpace and other Web sites?

MySpace Postings Lead To 4th Officer's Firing

Policy Says No Department Equipment Allowed On Web Sites

UPDATED: 4:06 pm MDT April 23, 2008

A fourth police officer with the Durango Police Department has lost his job because of a posting on his or her personal MySpace page, according to local reports.

MySpace is a popular social networking site where people post photos, blogs and other personal information to share with friends and family.

Christopher Mimmack, 40, was fired on Friday, the Durango Herald newspaper reported. A friend of Mimmack's and a former officer told the newspaper that in addition to posting material on MySpace, Mimmack hosted a Christmas party last year that police administrators found problematic because it appeared that he was letting fellow officers drive home intoxicated.

Last month two female officers and a male officer were forced to resign over content posted on MySpace. Some of the officers posted pictures of themselves in police uniforms and photos of themselves partying and having a good time with friends. They also wrote blogs and posted comments about work.

Durango police have refused to comment on the situation.

The Durango Herald said some of the controversial photos involved a snowman with genitalia, an officer allegedly holding a beer and a blog titled "Skunks, Drunks and crappy heat."

Tony Romero, one of the officers who was forced to resign, said all four officers are being treated unfairly in comparison with other activities that occurred at the police department. He told the newspaper that officers were sending "hardcore porn" via the city's e-mail server, but they were told to get rid of it and given "amnesty."

In February, the police department issued a new policy that said no police-issued equipment, such as uniforms and guns, can be shown any Web site without permission from the chief.
