DENVER -- Texas Rangers confirmed Friday that a 33-year-old Colorado Springs woman is considered a "person of interest" as they investigate who made the phone call that prompted a raid on a Texas polygamist compound."The Texas Ranger Division of the Texas Department of Public Safety is actively pursuing Rozita Swinton of Colorado Springs, Colo., as a 'person of interest' regarding telephone calls placed to a crisis center hot line in San Angelo, Texas, in late March 2008," the Texas Rangers said in a release Friday. Two Texas Rangers traveled to Colorado Springs on April 16 and met with officers from the Colorado Springs Police Department to discuss a possible connection between Swinton and telephone calls that alerted authorities to alleged abuse at the polygamist Yearning For Zion (YFZ) Ranch of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (FLDS) in Eldorado, Texas.
Swinton has previous arrests in Colorado for false reports, and Texas Rangers accompanied the Colorado Springs officers while they searched Swinton's apartment for items related to to those previous false reports, Texas authorities said."During the search, officers found several items that indicated a possible connection between Swinton and calls regarding the FLDS compounds in Colorado City, Ariz., and Eldorado, Texas," the Texas Rangers said. "These items of interest to Texas authorities were seized by the Colorado Springs Police Department and released to the Texas Rangers. These items will be evaluated and forwarded to various crime laboratories in Texas for analysis."It's not clear exactly what items were seized, nor how they allegedly linked Swinton to the calls. The affidavit for the search warrant has been sealed by an El Paso County judge.Swinton became a "person of interest" several days after law enforcement agencies entered the YFZ facility on April 3, the Texas Rangers said, although they did not say why.Texas authorities raided the Fundamentalist LDS compound after a child abuse center in San Angelo told law enforcement about several distressing calls from a female caller. The caller, who said her name was Sarah, said she was a 16-year-old girl who was living inside the secretive LDS compound and needed help. She claimed she had been physically and sexually assaulted and forced to become the wife of a 50-year-old man. She said she was pregnant with her second child.Police have not yet been able to locate the girl who made these calls, despite having removed 416 children from the ranch. However, authorities earlier this week said they believe the girl does exist.Staffers at the family crisis center hot line alerted the Texas Child Protective Services, who then contacted the Schleicher County Sheriff’s Department in Eldorado, Texas. They immediately asked for help from the Texas Rangers to execute the massive operation at the ranch."Once officers had gained access to the property, investigators obtained a second warrant based on evidence they witnessed regarding possible sexual assault," the Rangers said."The information leading the Texas Rangers to Swinton took several days to develop with intelligence and assistance from numerous law enforcement agencies in the United States and Canada, including the United States Marshals Service in San Antonio and Denver and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in British Columbia, Canada," the Rangers said. The information, evidence and a statement obtained from Swinton by the Texas Rangers while they were in Colorado will be forwarded to state and federal prosecutors for their review. Prosecutors will determine whether Swinton will be charged with a criminal offense, the Texas Rangers said. The Texas Rangers are still investigating whether teenage girls at the compound were forced to marry older males within the sect and if there was abuse.
Swinton's History Of False Reports
Swinton has been arrested before on charges of making false reports to authorities. The recent charge against Swinton was made in connection to calls received by police in February indicating she was 13 years old and trapped in a basement. In 2005, she was arrested in Castle Rock for claiming to be a pregnant teenager. She said her name was Jessica, but one of the aliases she used was "Sarah." She said she had been sexually abused by her father for eight years. Calling an adoption hot line, she claimed to have a new baby boy and wanted to give the child up for adoption. The "teen" was crying out for help but when help was offered by, police said Swinton backed off and became evasive."She would give us different types of vehicles, different colors of vehicles, so we were having a hard time trying to locate her," said Castle Rock police Cpl. Randall Speaect. "This went on for two to three days."He said one of the things he remembered was how young her voice sounded. He said he was surprised to learn her age based on her voice."When I personally talked to her, she did sound a lot younger than she actually was, kind of more like a child-like or teen type of voice," he said.
