Colorado Faces Extreme Weather Concerns

Engineers Predict Possible Drought, Floods

While drought-fed wildfires spread on one side of the state, flooding concerns due to record snow plague the other.

"It's been an interesting dichotomy this year," said Kevin Houck, a flood mitigation engineer with the Colorado Water Conservation Board. “It's not unusual to see this, but this year has been very extreme in terms of what we see out on the plains versus what we see out on the mountains."

The eastern plains have seen little moisture this winter, although they are currently entering their wet season when they hope to catch up.

Meanwhile, the statewide snow pack is at 126 percent of average.

Mike Gillespie, snow survey supervisor for the Natural Resources Conservation Service, said that means Coloradoans probably won’t have to worry about water supplies.

"On the downside, we do have a potential for flood problems if we get into a worst-case scenario with weather patterns in May and June," he said.

This year’s snow pack is similar to that of 1984 and 1997.

"In 1984, we had widespread regional snowmelt flooding in the western half of the state. Whereas in 1997, we had nothing more than isolated flooding in small pockets," said Houck. “The big difference was what happened to the weather once the snowmelt run-off season started… that’s the big unknown at this point.”

Houck said what they are worried about is a sustained warm-up of about five to seven days of very warm weather or widespread high-elevation rain.
