CDOT Launches New Motorcycle Safety Campaign As Rider Fatalities Rise

Campaign Will Focus On Rider Training

Motorcycle fatalities are on the rise in Colorado, doubling from 45 in 1995 to a record high of 90 deaths last year, the Colorado Department of Transportation said Wednesday.

That trend is continuing in 2008. The nicer weather has more motorcyclists hitting roads, and already this year, 10 riders have died in accidents, according to CDOT.

“Most of the fatalities are men, and most are not wearing a helmet,” said Sgt. Rich Munroe, supervisor for the Colorado State Patrol’s motorcycle team. “Statistics show that training and helmet use can reduce the number of fatalities and reduce medical cost of injuries sustained.”

CDOT has launched a new motorcycle safety program, called "Live to Ride," to encourage riders to take safety classes. The program focuses on training.

CDOT has partnered with a number of organizations throughout the state to encourage more riders to take a motorcycle safety-training course offered by Motorcycle Operator Safety Training.

CDOT is also working with insurance companies Allstate and Progressive to offer discounts to riders who complete the safety training class.

“Insurance companies have signed on as "Live to Ride" campaign partners because they know many riders also care about the pocketbook advantages to safety training,” said Carole Walker, executive director of the Rocky Mountain Insurance Information Association.
