BOULDER, Colo. -- University of Colorado junior linebacker Jake Duren has been dismissed from the football team following his arrest on campus. Boulder County jail records show he was arrested early Sunday on suspicion of first-degree criminal trespass. He was released on a personal recognizance bond. Coach Dan Hawkins said Duren was dismissed due to circumstances surrounding the arrest but didn't elaborate.
The Boulder Daily Camera newspaper reported that Duren was found bleeding and passed out in the hallway of a residence hall. The newspaper said there was a trail of blood that linked Duren to a smashed-in window of a vehicle in a parking lot.Cmdr. Brad Wiesley, with CU police, said it appeared that items inside the vehicle had been rummaged through. He also said Duren did not live at Smiley Court where he was found.Within hours, Colorado football coach Dan Hawkins removed Duren from the team. The coach released a statement Sunday about the dismissal, saying it was critical for Buffs players to represent the school in a positive light."We understand young people have many difficult obstacles to deal with, and we are committed to mentoring the young men in our program to become successful people," he said. "With that mentoring comes the understanding that there are high standards that must be met in order to be a part of our program."At least four other CU players have had run-ins with police this year.According to the Boulder Daily Camera, in March, tight end Riar Geer was arrested on suspicion of assaulting two men. Linebacker Lynn Katoa is accused of assaulting a student at a party in February. Both players were suspended. In January, linebacker Nate Vaiomounga was charged with criminal mischief. On the same night, fullback Kai Maiava was ticketed with underage possession and consumption of alcohol. Vaiomounga also was charged with underage possession and consumption of alcohol in February.
