DENVER -- Gov. Bill Ritter will sign a bill next week that will end the state's 75-year-old blue laws and allow liquor stores to open and sell alcohol on Sundays.Colorado law has banned liquor stores from opening on Sundays since prohibition ended.Even after Senate Bill 82 was passed by state lawmakers, there was pressure on the governor not to sign the bill. Among those against the plan were grocery and convenience stores. Owners of those stores are allowed to sell 3.2 beer on Sundays and were concerned their business would be hurt if liquor stores sold full-strength beer and alcohol on Sundays. One store owner told 7NEWS that about two-thirds of their beer sales came on Sundays.
The bill signing ceremony is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Monday. The law will take effect July 1.It allows Colorado to join 34 other states that permit Sunday alcohol sales at retail stores.Ritter signed 21 bills into law on Thursday. For a complete list of legislation Ritter has signed into law during the 2008 legislative session, go to Colorado.gov.
