CDC Tests Alamosa's Water For Parasites

Boiled Water Order Still In Effect For Alamosa

UPDATED: 6:43 pm MDT April 9, 2008

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is testing Alamosa's troubled water system for two parasites, giardia and cryptosporidium. The two parasites, which can can cause diarrhea, were found in the water system before it was flushed and disinfected.

The CDC has to test the post-flushing water to make sure the parasites have been eliminated from the water before the "all-clear" signal is given.

Once those tests show the water is suitable for drinking, Alamosa' boil order will be lifted. Results are not expected until this weekend.

Alamosa's entire water system was flushed after a salmonella outbreak last month sickened close to 400 people.

So far, at least 389 cases of salmonella have been documented. Sixteen people have been hospitalized.
