THORNTON, Colo. -- The driver who ran through a stop sign and was then broadsided by a pickup truck killed his mother and a family friend in the weekend crash, Thornton police said Wednesday.Irma Chavez–Serrano, 55, and 42-year-old Francisco Rodriquez-Reyes were killed in Saturday's night crash at East 160th Avenue and North Holly Street.Chavez-Serrano was the mother of Manuel Omar Chavez-Serrano, the driver of the van. He was ticketed for driving without a valid license. He faces other charges pending further investigation and toxicology results, authorities said.
The van was packed with five adults and four children, including an 18-month-old baby. The driver of the van was not hurt but the other passengers had serious injuries. All of the victims are from Commerce City and most of them are related.Police said the van was southbound on North Holly Street when a pickup truck traveling eastbound on East 160th Avenue slammed into it. The van rolled onto its side and stopped in a ditch. The pickup truck was being driven by a 39-year-old Fort Lupton man who is not being identified because he was not at fault. He and his 4-year-old daughter were restrained with seat belts and were not hurt.A number of residents told 7NEWS that they have been concerned about the intersection for some time. One man who came to the scene after he heard about Saturday night's crash said that his wife was in a similar crash eight weeks earlier. He said that his wife did not see the stop sign at that intersection and believes that having a sign warning drivers they are approaching a stop sign could save lives.
