DENVER -- A 27-year-old mother was arrested Wednesday, accused of giving methamphetamine to her 3-month-old baby, Denver police said. The infant was brought to Children's Hospital last Friday suffering from seizures. Doctors called police after they determined that the baby had ingested meth. The child's mother, Katreice Trujillo, was arrested on allegations of child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury. The case is being investigated by the Denver Police Missing and Exploited Persons Unit.
According to court documents obtained by 7NEWS, Trujillo told police she had the drug next to the baby formula and mixed the formula and meth together.Trujillo told an investigator she "accidentally then put the mixture into the baby bottle and fed (baby)," according to the document. The victim's father was also interviewed by police. The arrest affidavit stated Trujillo told him she had purchased meth, placed it by the baby's bottle, and the meth fell in.Denver police spokesman Sonny Jackson said officers did not find a meth lab in the couple's home."It's shocking," said Terencio Franco-Neto, who lives near the house in the 3000 block of Arapahoe Street in Denver.Another neighbor, who asked not to be identified, said she's heard fighting in the house.Jackson said the child is fortunate to be alive."Think about it. Methamphetamine can kill an adult, now you've got a 3-month-old baby taking this kind of drug. It's a very dangerous situation," Jackson said.Jackson said the baby, who has been released from the hospital, and another child were placed in the custody of social services.Trujillo has had a run-in with the law before. She has a lengthy criminal history with arrests in Denver, Lakewood, Brighton, Thornton and Northglenn for harassment, assault and driving with a suspended license.
