Alamosa Announces Stage 2 Water Restrictions

All Residents May Now Use City Water To Shower

POSTED: 5:20 pm MDT March 30, 2008
UPDATED: 5:59 pm MDT March 31, 2008

Alamosa officials announced Monday the entire city is now on stage 2 water restrictions. That means residents may use city water for short showers, toilet flushing and clothes washing, but should not use it for cooking or drinking.

Alamosa officials also reopened city schools Monday.

A news release from the city called the reopening of the schools "a bit of normalcy."

Residents are being told to run each faucet, both hot and cold, for five minutes to dilute the chlorinated water in their homes and businesses. Residents will not be able to use their water for drinking and cooking until they reach stage 3.

Officials say they don't know when the city’s tap water will be authorized for normal use, they said Monday's stage 2 milestone allows for extensive testing by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. Water samples are being collected throughout the city and are being tested to ensure the water distribution system is free of bacteria following the super chlorination phase which took place last week.

Since March 19, residents have been told not to use water straight from the tap, after bacteria was found. The source of contamination is unknown.

There have been at least 90 confirmed cases of salmonella and 326 people sickened. Thirteen people were hospitalized.

The schools closed last Tuesday, when officials began pumping high concentrations of chlorine into the water. Adams State College closed Wednesday.

Three distribution centers will be in operation Monday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. to provide safe drinking water for those who need it. The centers are located at the old Kmart building, Boyd Park and San Luis Valley Regional Medical Center. Community members are asked to collect the water in bulk by using large containers. The distribution site at the hospital will be discontinued after today; the two other centers will remain in operation until further notice. Recycling bins will remain at all three sites.

A news release from the city of Almosa lists some statistics since the incident started. As of March 31, 2008:
