Teen Gets 10 Days Jail, Probation After Crash That Killed Three

Victim's Relatives Have Mixed Emotions Over Punishment

An 18-year-old who pleaded guilty to causing the deaths of three teens last year was sentenced to three years probation and 10 days in jail Friday.

Jeremiah Ogden pleaded guilty in January to three counts of careless driving resulting in death and three traffic violations involving restrictions of underage drivers.

In court Friday he apologized for his actions. "I know I'll never be able to let this truly go, never forget it, because they'll always be on my mind," Ogden said.

"He killed three people and got ten days in jail and I think it's ridiculous," said Cayt Gentry, a friend of one of the victims.

The charges stem from a crash on Sept. 8 when Ogden was driving a car with three 17-year-old passengers. He ran a stop sign and was hit by a refrigerated delivery truck.

Kayla DeMars died at the scene. Angelina Ford and Daniel "Danny" LoSasso died later at the hospital.

"I absolutely am appalled with what he was given as a sentence," said Gentry's mother, Sherry Gentry. "If that's all these three children were worth."

"I think it was an appropriate sentence," said Jefferson County District Attorney Scott Storey. "He's not a bad person. He was careless that night and those seconds defines the rest of his life as well."

Kayla DeMars' father, Russell Sealy, told 7NEWS "It's something I will openly admit I didn't present or agree with."

"But the judge presented his logic," Sealy said. "I have to sort that out."

In addition to the 10 days in jail, Ogden must complete 300 hours of community service, mental health treatment and attend a restorative justice meeting.

The judge ruled the community service should be served at either a hospital or rehabilitation center. If not allowed to serve at either, Ogden must raise $15,000 for scholarships in the victim's names.
