Men Masked As 'Jason' Target Hispanic Businesses

Police Ask For Help In Identifying Bandits In Armed Robberies

POSTED: 3:41 pm MDT March 24, 2008
UPDATED: 11:54 am MDT March 25, 2008

Aurora police are trying to find two armed men who held up five Hispanic businesses wearing white plastic hockey masks, similar to the one worn by the Jason character in the "Friday the 13th" movies.

The armed robberies all occurred within the last two weeks. Of the five Hispanic businesses that were hit, four are restaurants and one is a carniceria or meat market.

One of the restaurants, Tortas Y Tacos, was robbed right before they closed. The restaurant has surveillance video of the crime.

"They came in with the gun already pointing to her and saying, 'Give me the money.Give me the money,'" said Hector Rodriguez, the restaurant owner's son.

The men, both in their 20s, spoke in English and Spanish and robbed the businesses between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m., police said.

"The truth is that we didn't see them because they had their faces covered and had a handkerchief covering the mouth," said cook Carmen Nava, describing the suspects' faces through a Spanish translator. "So we only saw their eyes."

She believes they may have been customers who were eating at the restaurant just before the robberies.

At least one handgun was seen in all of the robberies, police said.

"The more often they engage in this risky type of behavior, the higher the likelihood that something at some point could go wrong," said Detective Shannon Lucy with the Aurora Police Department.

The robbers wore gray or black hooded sweatshirts and blue jeans. One man is about 5 feet 10 inches tall to 6 feet tall with medium to heavy build. The other man is slightly shorter, about 5 feet 7 inches to 5 feet 8 inches tall with a skinny to medium build.

Police are offering up to $1,000 for information leading to the identification and arrest of the men involved. Call Aurora police at 303-739-1835 if you have information about the robberies.

The robberies:
  • March 11: Taco Y Salsa, 2248 S. Chambers Road
  • March 16: Los Toritos Restaurant, 304 Havana St.
  • March 18: Tortas Y Tacos, 796 N. Peoria St.
  • March 20: Guadalajara Restaurant, 1001 S. Abilene St.
  • March 21: Carniceria Dariana, 12028 E. Mississippi Ave.
