March 23, 2008: Parents Supply Gift Baskets For NICU

Amy, Scott Ruter Had Two Premature Daughters

None of us plan on being in the emergency room, just as new parents don't expect their child to be in intensive care.

But when they arrive at Parker Adventist Hospital, those parents have a welcome surprise, and it's all thanks to this week's 7Everyday Heroes, Amy and Scott Ruter.

The Ruter family knows the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) at Parker Adventist Hospital all too well. Both of their daughters were born prematurely. Payton and Adison are healthy now, but when they first entered the world in the NICU, it was a tense time. Adding to the stress is the fact that most parents-to-be don’t imagine themselves coming here.

So Amy and Scott make gift baskets for families in the NICU. It's an idea they got after a friend made a basket for them. The baskets are full of helpful things like a disposable camera, premie clothes, snacks, and even a journal. Parents love them.

Amy and Scott visit every month or so with their gift baskets. It's a very special place to them and will always be close to their hearts. They want to give back.
