BOULDER, Colo. -- A Boulder high school held a day of silence Thursday following the sudden death of a sophomore.Officials said the special education student left class around 12:45 p.m. Wednesday and was in a hallway near the school's gym when he collapsed. An instructor and a student saw the teen and called emergency personnel. He was taken to Boulder Community Hospital, where he died.Fairview High School Principal Donald Stensrud identified the teen as Bryce Atkinson, a student with a pre-existing heart condition. Atkinson would have turned 17 on Thursday.
Friends told the Boulder Daily Camera that Atkinson had a special view of life."He was a person who knew how to live life, and what's important," said 17-year-old Fairview junior Mo Warren."He always knew how to make people smile," said junior Jenny Fischer, 17.Near the school's special-education room, teachers and parents of other students carried pink roses in honor of Atkinson. The school suspended Thursday's activities for "All Cultures Week," and instead, is offering counseling to students.
