Police: Teens Beat Up Hispanic Man, Hurl Insults

15-Year-Old Boy Says Suspects Roughed Him Up On Bus

Two teenagers were arrested Tuesday in Boulder, accused of beating up a Hispanic man while they asked, "Why are you stealing our jobs?"

The 26-year-old Louisville victim said he was leaving the PDQ convenience store on Manhattan Circle and S. Boulder Road when two teenagers called him racist names and began pushing and punching him.

The victim, Ivan Ponce De Leon-Najera, said one of the teens also tried to spit on him.

Officers witnessed the attack and took 19-year-old Abraham Paquet and 19-year-old Joshua Ruzek in custody. They are being held for investigation of a bias-motivated crime, assault, and harassment.

Investigators also learned that the teens allegedly roughed up a 15-year-old on the bus just before the fight at PDQ.

The Caucasian boy said the teens grabbed his cell phone and skateboard and when he tried to get it back, they pushed him to the ground. He was able to get his cell phone back but when he left the bus he called 911 because he was concerned they would hurt someone else, police said.

Paquet is also accused of robbery and Ruzek may face a charge of possession/consumption of alcohol by an underage person.

Anyone with information about the crime or the suspects is asked to contact Detective Carlene Hofmann at the Boulder Police Detective section at 303-441-3330. Those with information who wish to remain anonymous should contact Boulder County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or 1-800-444-3776. Tips can also be submitted via the Crime Stoppers Web site at www.crimeshurt.com. Those submitting tips through Crime Stoppers that lead to the arrest and filing of charges on a suspect(s) may be eligible for a cash reward of up to $1,000 from Boulder County Crime Stoppers.
