DENVER -- Aurora has them. So does Boulder and Greenwood Village. Now the city and county of Denver is planning to install cameras at red lights to ticket drivers who do not stop.Denver police say the first four intersections to get camera-ticketing systems will be: Sixth Avenue and Lincoln Street, Eight Avenue and Speer Boulevard, Sixth Avenue and Kalamath Street and 36th Avenue and Quebec Street.
Denver has signed a contract with Redflex Traffic Systems Inc. to implement the photo red-light traffic enforcement program. The next step in this process is to obtain the plans and permits for these intersections.Permitting, installation and training on the photo red-light program are expected to be completed and fully operational by late May or early June of this year.Once the cameras are installed, there will be a 30-day warning period. Tickets will go out, but they will just be a warning. After that, violators will get a ticket in the mail. The registered owner of a vehicle will be allowed to examine the digital photo and video images and pay fines using a secure Web site and personal identification number listed on the ticket.Traffic summons and complaints will only be issued after an individual case is reviewed by the Denver Police Department.Denver police told 7NEWS in a statement that the main goal of the photo red-light program is public safety.Intersection crashes account for more than 45 percent of all reported crashes and 21 percent of fatalities. In 2003, 9,213 Americans died as a result of an intersection-related crash -- a rate of more than one an hour.
