Mystery Looms Over Breckenridge Disappearance

Mom: 'Someone Knows Something'

POSTED: 11:56 pm MST March 3, 2008
UPDATED: 10:41 am MST March 4, 2008

The family of a man who went missing in Breckenridge has hired their own private investigator.

Mike Barbiere, of New Jersey, went missing the morning of Feb. 8, after a night out with his friends. The 23-year-old was seen on surveillance video leaving Cecilia's Bar at 1:30 in the morning.

"It is main street Breckenridge; stores, shops, other people, cars," said Chris Barbiere, Mike’s mom. "If something happens to you someone sees something."

She said the recent snowmelt proves that her son is not laying out in the snow somewhere, as some have suspected. Friends said he left the bar in blizzard conditions after having at least 20 drinks. Police have interviewed eight women and three men who were spotted with Mike at the bar before he disappeared, but investigators still have no clues to his whereabouts.

Investigators do not suspect any of the men or women of foul play.

Chris and the rest of the family have been rotating shifts in Breckenridge, passing out flyers and searching for any possible clues.

"You work all day from morning to night and you collapse," she said. "You hope to sleep for a few hours, give your brain a rest and then start up again."

The Breckenridge police department said they are in contact with the Babriere family’s investigator on a daily basis.

The Barbiere family is pleading for anyone with information to come forward.

Through tears, Chris said, "He’s 23, but as a mother, he is my baby. I want him. I want him."

The family is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to Barbiere's whereabouts.

Anyone with information can e-mail the family on a Web site they developed. To learn more information about Mike Barbiere and the case go to HelpFindMike.com.
