GOLDEN, Colo. -- Nuns at the Mother Cabrini Shrine in Golden are holding a fundraiser to help preserve an underground water supply threatened by drought.
The shrine has always depended on a spring on Lookout Mountain for water during its 90-year history.
But that water is expected to run out by August, said Sister Bernadette Casciano, earlier last month.
The Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart hope to raise $250,000 so the shrine can tap into Golden's city water system instead.
A fundraiser is scheduled Friday at the Hyatt Regency in Denver.
Legend has it that Mother Francis Cabrini initially was discouraged by some people from buying land in Golden because she was told there was no water on it.
But she found the water source by tapping stones at various spots on the land.
Cabrini crisscrossed America founding schools and orphanages, died in 1917 and in 1946 became the first American to be canonized a saint.
The popular retreat and prayer center receives 150,000 visitors and guests each
year.
