Witness: Shawna Nelson Vented Frustration At Shooting Range

Expert Links Shell Casings At Crime Scene To Ken Nelson's Gun

Wednesday was a productive day for prosecutors in the Shawna Nelson murder trial.

They put 20 witnesses on the stand, among them, a former dispatcher who had worked with the defendant.

Jennifer Morrison told jurors that Nelson had talked about her frustration at not being able to get Ignacio Garraus to leave Heather Garraus.

"She said she would vent her frustration by going to the shooting range and pretending her target was Heather," Morrison said.

Jurors also heard from an expert witness who told them that shell casings found at the crime scene were fired from Ken Nelson's Glock 22, .40 caliber revolver.

Agent Alan Hammond of the Aurora Police Department, formerly with CBI, said he reached that conclusion after firing two test rounds from the Glock and comparing the unique pattern left on the casings by the firing pin.

But Hammond couldn't say that the bullet found at the crime scene was fired from the same gun.

"In my opinion," Hammond said, "the bullet found at the crime scene was not fired from a revolver."

Prosecutors then called Fred Brown to the stand. He is the Commercial Fleet Division Manager at the Spradley-Barr Auto Group. Brown knows Ford trucks. He told jurors that after he watched security video from an ATM, he was able to identify a pickup truck seen driving past the credit union just before the shooting as a Ford F-250.

Brown said he could tell by looking at the headlights, side markers, and cab lights that it was an F-250 Super Cab, Super Duty, XLT, four wheel drive.

That's the kind of pickup the defendant was found driving shortly after the shooting.

Nelson's former best friend, Michelle Moore, told jurors Tuesday that Shawna confided in her that she wanted Heather Garraus out of the way.

On Wednesday, Moore was asked if she thought she could have prevented the shooting by going to police earlier. She said she didn't know. The prosecutor then asked if she was facing nine years for being an accessory to murder. She said, "Yes."

Under cross examination, Moore was asked if before she was facing nine years she was facing 48 years. She said, "Yes."

Moore reached a plea deal Tuesday where conspiracy charges were dropped in exchange for a guilty plea to accessory and a promise to testify truthfully in the Nelson trial.

The public defender asked if Moore had lied to police. She said, "Yes." He then said, "and now we're to take you at your word?"

She responded, "You can take my word and evidence."
