Missionary Ridge Fire Flares Up, Some Re-Evacuated

POSTED: 4:29 p.m. MDT June 27, 2002
UPDATED: 5:00 p.m. MDT June 27, 2002

Firefighters in southwestern Colorado continue to have trouble, making any progress on the Missionary Ridge Fire.

It's now burned around 71,000 acres northwest of Durango and still only 30 percent contained.

The weather certainly isn't helping matters much.

Some residents near Vallecito Dam, who had been allowed back home were re-evacuated.

An interagency fire management team said that high winds and hot temperatures are pushing the fire through previously burned areas.

The fire has destroyed at least 45 homes and 26 other buildings about 10 miles north of Durango.

The fire started June 9 and is believed to be human-caused.
