THORNTON, Colo. -- A man suspected of killing his neighbors over the weekend after a long dispute over parking spaces and noise complaints turned himself in Monday afternoon, ending a nearly 48-hour manhunt.Lance Leroy McDermed, 36, walked into the lobby of Thornton police headquarters at about 2:30 p.m. and told the officer at the front desk "I'm the guy you're looking for," police said. He was arrested without incident."His mother and stepfather picked him up from Cheyenne, Wyo. and brought him down to our location," said Thornton police spokesman Matt Barnes.
His car was found abandoned two hours earlier at a truck stop at the intersection of Intersection 25 and Colorado Highway 119 in Weld County. Employees of the Del Camino Plaza and Truck Stop noticed the maroon Chevrolet Cavalier sitting empty in the lot and notified the Weld County sheriff's department. Investigators said the plates had been switched and did not match the car.McDermed is being held for investigation of two counts of first-degree murder, and will be held at the Adams County Detention Facility without bond."We are glad that Lance did the right thing and turned himself in," said Mike Archuleta, Vera's brother-in-law.The handgun involved in the shooting has not been found. For four years McDermed lived next to Vera Marie Escobedo, 41, and her husband, Marco Antonio Escobedo, 44. The Escobedos were gunned down Saturday night inside their condo at 9122 Gale Blvd.Police said on Saturday at about 6:30 p.m., McDermed walked to his neighbor's door at the Autumn Creek condo complex, rang the door bell and waited until the Escobedos arrived at the door."I just heard him make the comment to Vera, tell Marco I hit his car," said Archuleta who was in the condo at the time of the shooting. "After that, I heard her say, hit his car and what the F and gunshots started."Archuleta's 2-year-old daughter and 4-year-old son, were with him inside the condo during the shooting and saw what happened."My children should not have had to witness this incident," said Archuleta.Police could not say what specifically led to Saturday night's shooting, but neighbors told 7NEWS the Escobedo's and McDermed had an ongoing dispute over parking and noise issues. McDermed even used a surveillance camera outside his home to monitor their parking, although some said it was a fake camera."I know it was not a feud. I know it was not an ongoing feud. It was a one-way harassment because my sister and brother-in-law would not do anything to hurt anybody. And they weren't angry people," said Vesa Salas-Ray, the victim's sister. The family is relieved McDermed is in custody but they still can't make sense of the couple's deaths."Why? Why did you do this to my brother and sister?" the victim's sister, Vena Vega, sobbed."For something like this to happen is sad," said Seth Thomas, a neighbor. "If you are a neighbor, you've got to have common respect and work things out like an adult."On July 23, 2007, McDermed went to the Escobedo's home and swore at Vera Escobedo, the family said. She called police and filed a harassment charge against him.According to Colorado Bureau of Investigation records, McDermed has no prior criminal records. He lives with his wife at the condo, but she was in Fort Collins with friends during the shooting. She was in contact with detectives after he fled and is not connected to the murder case, police said. While McDermed was on the run, police issued a national alert saying he was armed and dangerous."We're very relieved and wanted to thank the news media for the help. I think that helped locate the vehicle and the eventual turning in of Mr. McDermed," Barnes said.
