New Fire Breaks Out Near Durango

POSTED: 6:38 p.m. MDT June 25, 2002
UPDATED: 11:54 a.m. MDT June 26, 2002

A new fire erupted Tuesday afternoon just west of the massive blaze near Durango, forcing more families to evacuate.

Valley Fire -- home on fire

The new fire is called the Valley Fire, and it has burned about 400 acres and destroyed six structures just west of the Missionary Ridge Fire.

Federal officials say the blaze forced the evacuation of about 240 homes when it flared up Tuesday afternoon.

Firefighters have a bulldozer line around the perimeter of the blaze, but they're not confident it will be able to stop it.

The fire is less than two miles from the northern edge of Durango and edging slowly southward. The main road out of Durango to the north, U.S. 550, has been shut down.

The Falls Creek Ranch and High Meadows Ranch subdivisions were evacuated as are homes along County Road 203 from Trumbell Lane to the 4500 block area.

Pre-evacuation alerts were advised from Trumbell Lane to the 7200 block area.

Authorities say the blaze appears to be unrelated to the larger Missionary Ridge Fire.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has authorized funds to fight this latest fire. It's the 14th Colorado wildfire to qualify for FEMA fire management assistance this year.

Missionary Ridge Fire Still Burning Out Of Control

The Missionary Ridge Fire has so far burned more than 67,000 acres, destroyed 45 homes and is 30 percent contained.

It continues to burn out of control in the same area -- less than two miles from Durango city limits.

Tuesday's hot weather and shifting winds hampered firefighting efforts to get control of the blaze.

Nearly 1,200 homes have been evacuated. The cost to fight the fire so far is ust under $14 million.

La Plata officials released a partial list of the homes that the Missionary Ridge Fire destroyed late Monday.

The other addresses have not been released pending notification of the families.
