The Utah man wanted by authorities for questioning in connection with the disappearance of Elizabeth Smart, who was abducted June 5 from her Salt Lake City home, is in FBI custody in a Martinsburg, W.Va., hospital, police and FBI officials said.
Edmunds (pictured, right), 26, was in intensive care, authorities said. He was captured after he gave inconsistent information to hospital staff, who then tipped off authorities Thursday morning, a spokesman for the U.S. marshal's service said.Edmunds checked into a hospital in Martinsburg under a bogus name and was being treated for a "possible drug-related overdose," the marshal's service spokesman said.
FBI agents from the bureau's Martinsburg office took Edmunds into custody at the hospital and requested a warrant to search Edmunds' vehicle, a green Saturn that was parked in the hospital lot, said FBI special agent Dan Roberts, speaking at a news conference that followed Edmunds' discovery.Salt Lake City Police Chief Rick Dinse, speaking at the news conference, reiterated that Edmunds is not a suspect in the kidnapping -- only a man wanted for questioning. Dinse has said previously that Edmunds was in the Federal Heights neighborhood at the time of the abduction and may have seen something that would help the investigation."We do not have a suspect at this time," Dinse said. The transient, living out of his car, had been seen near the Smart home two days before Smart's disappearance.Edmunds has been in trouble before. Police consider Edmunds to be dangerous, with an outstanding warrant for fraud and assault on a police officer. In early May, police said he was stopped by an officer for having an improper car registration. He allegedly sprayed the officer with pepper spray and sped off.Records show he's also been charged with burglary and forgery in Utah.

The 14-year-old girl was taken at gunpoint from her bedroom on June 5. Her 9-year-old sister, Mary Katherine, was the sole witness to the abduction. The search is more than 2 weeks old, but some 10,000 people are expected to spend part of the weekend looking for the 14-year-old girl.Elizabeth's father, Ed, was tearful again Friday as he spoke to reporters. He pleaded with the girl's kidnapper to let her go."I would do anything to have her back in my arms," Ed Smart said.He said he and the family still believe Elizabeth is alive. Police said they've given polygraph tests to a number of people, including some of the 14-year-old girl's family members. They won't comment on the results.Dinse said police have searched the hard drives of 12 computers but haven't found anything linked to the crime. They say the girl's family members willingly turned their computers over to police. Dinse said police still need to check out about 400 of the thousands of leads they've been given. Police said they've also discounted a ransom note that was e-mailed to the TV show "America's Most Wanted." Dinse said the note was received after the date it gave for turning over the ransom.
