The Million Fire, two miles south of South Fork, Colo, was downgraded to 4,500 acres Friday after officials were able to get a more accurate estimate of the fire size.
The fire was relatively calm Thursday with expected winds not materializing until late in the afternoon under predominantly overcast skies.
As many as 3,000 people were evacuated in a 15-mile radius from the fire Thursday. That included four sub-divisions. Those evacuated were south of U.S. Highway 160. An evacuation center was opened at Del Norte High School. However, as the evacuations increased, the center was moved to Ski-Hi Park in Monte Vista, Colo.
Fire officials said if the fire crosses Highway 160 an additional 150 homes would be threatened.
The fire has destroyed 11 homes and two outbuildings, officials said.
A type-one hotshot crew arrived Thursday evening to manage the fire. Fire officials were using two helicopters and eight handcrews on the fire for a total of 256 personnel on the fire line.
Hot, dry weather and single-digit humidity was expected to give firefighters problems Friday.
The fire was believed to be "human caused," officials said.
