Judge Rules Rolo Can Move Temporarily To New Kennel

Fate Of German Shepard In Alleged Attack Still Undecided

A dog accused of attacking an Arvada mom who was out walking with her son last summer, gets to move to a new temporary home Tuesday.

Rolo, a German Shepherd, has been impounded at the Table Mountain Animal Center since August.

The dog’s owner, Laura Hagan, has been paying $10 a day in boarding fees.

Hagan’s sister, Michelle Gath, told 7NEWS that between boarding costs at Table Mountain, a new fence and attorney fees, Hagan has spent between $15,000 – $20,000.

On Monday, municipal judge Mike Graber ruled that Rolo can be transferred to Action Kennel Service.

Hagan’s attorney told the judge that supporters would pay the boarding and training fees at the new facility.

“I want to support Rolo,” said Monika Courtney while standing on the street corner adjacent to municipal court, with a sign that said, “Is your dog next?”

“He’s been incarcerated way too long,” Courtney added. “We need to draw attention to the public that any animal caught in a court case like this should be processed much more quickly.”

Rolo was ordered put down after the victim, Kathy Hardin, and several of her neighbors told the court they felt the dog was a danger to neighborhood kids.

Hagan’s supporters said Rolo is a good dog.

“He’s a wonderful dog,” said next door neighbor Linda Balczarek. “He loves to pick up rocks, he loves to play.”

Balczarek said when Hardin and her son were walking near West 57th Avenue and Zephyr St. July 1, Rolo got out of his yard and ran toward them. “The minute she saw Rolo she started screaming,” Balczarek said. “Well, Rolo’s the type of dog that when you scream he’s going to jump at you to find out what’s the matter.”

Rolo’s death sentence is on hold pending the outcome of a trial.

The judge has issued a gag order for anyone involved in the trial, which is scheduled for Feb. 25.
