Caucus Events Conflict With Parent-Teacher Meetings

Conference Timing Conflicts With Caucus Hours

As Super Tuesday looms, some parents and teachers face a difficult choice between previously scheduled parent-teacher conferences or caucus events.

"It's unfortunate that some teachers and parents won't be able to participate in the caucus. But hopefully they can rush over and get to the caucus by 7 p.m.," said Manolo Gonzalez-Estay, a volunteer with the Barack Obama campaign in Colorado.

Rumors flew Monday that Aurora Public Schools had conflicting times for the all-important face-to-face meetings between teachers and parents and the political excitement surrounding Tuesday.

"One thing we see is that education comes first. No matter what, I think it's important to see that parents have to do this. And there's no advantage or disadvantage. The disadvantage is that not everyone's going to get to caucus," said Gonzalez-Estay.

But, on further inspection, the only potential conflict was at East Middle School.

And last week, the school moved its teacher meeting times back to end at 6 p.m. instead of 6:30 p.m., giving parents and politically active staff members a better chance at meeting the 7 p.m. caucus deadline.

Monday, at a staff meeting, the principal told employees he'd made a simple scheduling mistake earlier.

"The schedule's set in June for the next school year. And, of course, thinking about an election at that time wasn't a high priority. At least they figured it out now and fixed it," said Lane Williams, a science teacher at East.

The state teacher's union also took several calls from irate staff members and estimates 12 to 20 Denver metro-area schools have conflicting or potentially conflicting parent-teacher conferences scheduled late Tuesday afternoon.

At the University of Denver, a handful of law students complained to the state Democratic Party that they had to pick class or caucus.

But late Monday, the dean offered excused absences to any law students who missed class in order to attend caucus events.

The deadline to be in line at your particular location in order to participate in caucus events is 7 p.m.
