DURANGO, Colo. -- The fire in the San Juan National Forest north of Durango has grown by 8,000 acres and has destroyed at least 10 homes.
The blaze is threatening several subdivisions and has forced the
evacuations of at least 1,700 homes. It has scorched at least
38,000 acres.
Fire managers say flames up to 500 feet high on Monday forced
firefighters to back off and take refuge in safe zones. The blaze
is so intense that it's burning around natural barriers such as
roads, rivers and even reservoirs that supply water to southwestern
Colorado.
More than 860 firefighters are working the fire and more crews
are on their way.
Firefighters say hot, dry, windy weather won't help on Tuesday.
