Citizens Take Fire Ban Into Their Own Hands
Forest Patrols Organized To Extinguish Illegal Campfires

A group of residents living under the gun from the Hayman fire along the Highway 285 corridor have organized a "campfire posse" to patrol forested areas near their homes this weekend.
The organizer, who did not want his name released, told TheDenverChannel.com that he and his neighbors are fed up with people who disobey the fire ban and go to the foothills to start campfires.
"We will not be intimidated," said the organizer. "This is no different than if someone walked up my drive with a can of gasoline and a match." he said someone with an illegal campfire in the area threatens 4,000 residents.
The "posse" will meet with a Park County Sheriff's deputy Saturday morning in Bailey, Colo., to be briefed on what they legally can do and what they should do if they spot campers with campfires. More a dozen people are expected to attend the meeting and participate in the weekend-long patrols.
"We will go in, put the campfire out, take pictures, license plates and names," said the organizer. He said they will notify authorities and stay until officers respond and arrest those who are responsible.
