BOULDER, Colo. -- The mother of an 8-year-old girl has been charged with two misdemeanor counts of child abuse in connection with a case involving a man accused of drinking her daughter's urine.

The woman, who will not be identified by TheDenverChannel.com in order to protect the identity of the girl, turned herself in at the Boulder County Jail on Saturday and posted a $1,000 bond.

She is due in court on Feb. 19.

Joseph S. Cardillo, 47, of Niwot, entered a not guilty plea on Friday to a charge of sex assault on a child by a person in position of trust and a pattern of assaulting the girl. He's accused of using a sex toy on the 8-year-old girl, in addition to drinking her urine.

According to the woman's arrest warrant, authorities were called to the girl's school in October on a welfare check. Teachers said the girl often showed up late, unfed and wearing dirty clothes.

According to the a report in the Boulder Daily Camera, the girl's mother told a teacher that her daughter is a child of the sun and can't get up when it is dark outside. An arrest warrant obtained by the newspaper indicated the mother also said the girl's eyes get "close-up X-ray vision" every night at midnight, which allows her to diagnose herself with sickle cell anemia, the warrant states.

Cardillo was a friend of the girl's mother, who said she met originally him the International Society for Krishna Consciousness in Boulder. She said she met Cardillo in public places every weekend for the past year so he could take her daughter to his place for sleepovers. Even though her daughter had been going to the man's basement apartment since June 2006, the mother told investigators she did not know where Cardillo lived and had never been to his home.

The girl told investigators that she slept naked with Cardillo in the same bed when she visited and they would bathe or use the hot tub together, while both were nude.

According to Cardillo's arrest affidavit, the girl's mother said she knew about the nudity and urine drinking, but told investigators that it wasn't hurting anyone and she knew other people who drink urine. She said both she and Cardillo are nudists.

Cardillo's trial is set for June 2.
