DENVER -- Almost nine years after he was found guilty of murder, Tim Masters now looks forward to the taste of freedom.Masters said he feels like he is in the twilight zone and he wants to see his family and regain his reputation. In a written statement to 7NEWS, Masters said he has always been "hopeful but pessimistic" about getting out of jail.
He thought this day would come but "had no idea when."Masters was only 15 when he was accused of killing Peggy Hettrick in a field near his home in Fort Collins.A special prosecutor re-examining a controversial 1999 Fort Collins murder conviction recommended Masters get a new trial because of new DNA evidence that has surfaced.Adams County District Attorney Don Quick said in a news conference Friday afternoon there is new DNA evidence in the Tim Masters case that excludes Masters and points to another suspect."It is our belief as special prosecutors in this case... that this new evidence requires a vacation of the original conviction... and entitles Mr. Masters to a new trial," special prosecutor Don Quick said.Quick said details would be released Tuesday at a court hearing where he'll ask that the conviction be vacated and that Masters be released on a personal recognizance bond.Additional Resource:
