Letter From Emily K. Busick

POSTED: 1:30 pm MST January 13, 2008
UPDATED: 2:57 pm MST January 13, 2008

This letter is in response to your news article “Man Accused Of Beating Kitten Against Bookcase.” I believe that you should begin a story by checking your facts. Many of the facts of this case were misrepresented in The Daily Camera. You should try talking to Charles before printing this information. The newspaper did not do this. I have also put in a call to the writer of that article.

The police were aware of the dead cat the night that Chuck II was arrested for assault. They did not remove ANY cats because they did not believe they were in any danger even after hearing of how the cat died.

Charles did not originally plan to injure the cat; merely remove it from the oxygen tube that was keeping his wife alive. He was very upset at finding the cat chewing the tube and was in a self proclaimed rage. He realized that he had fatally injured the cat, and did not feel right letting it suffer, believing that would be inhumane, so he finished the job. He is not denying the death of the cat, or that it came from his hands, but it was not as it has been portrayed.

Also, if you think that he doesn’t feel bad, or that he deserves punishment, think about the punishment he has already endured. Christine Reid’s article, as well as yours, mentioned the fact that his son committed suicide. Don’t you think that counts as punishment? Charles had to see his barely 21 year old son be carted away in a body bag only two days after he got his wife back. Not only that, but he was left to clean the bathroom where the death occurred.

Take it from someone very close to the situation. Charles is very sorry for what has happened. In punishment he has lost his son, and now has had all of his friends and family see him splashed not only in the paper, but also on news reports and web sites. This is embarrassing to him. He understands that what happened was not ok, but to have the facts so grossly misrepresented to the entire state, and world, is not fair. Please remember this when you start tearing someone’s life apart. This is not only hurting him, but also his wife, who is really very sick, and his family.

I, and he, would appreciate a possibility to share the other side of this story. The side where he is not a monster, but just a man who made a mistake while trying to save his wife’s life. Please feel free to print this letter, as I am not ashamed to stand my ground on this. The facts printed have not been checked and many are incorrect. Please understand that this is a very unfair thing to do to this family.

Sincerely,

Emily K. Busick

Daughter of Chuck (Charles) and Stacy Corwin

Sister of Chuckie (Chuck II) Corwin
