Investigation Into Slaying Of Soldier Reveals Wider Crimes

Fort Carson Soldier Allegedly Shot Civilians In Iraq

UPDATED: 5:31 pm MST January 9, 2008

The police investigation into the slaying of a Fort Carson soldier has ballooned into a much wider investigation, including allegations of soldiers shooting civilians in Iraq, court documents and an arrest affidavit show.

In a previously sealed arrest affidavit obtained by a Colorado Springs TV station, KRDO, and shared with 7NEWS, one Fort Carson soldier described how he and two other soldiers allegedly had a hand in the shooting of two soldiers in Colorado Springs.

The first shooting happened on Aug. 4.

Police said Robert James was found in the parking lot of the Bank of Broadmoor. He had been robbed and had multiple gunshot wounds to the head and neck, police said.

The second shooting happened on Nov. 30. Police said Kevin Shields, 25, was found with three gunshot wounds, to the face, neck and groin.

Shields had just returned to Colorado from Iraq.

When investigating the shooting of Shields, investigators were led to three men -- Bruce Bastien, Louis Bressler and Kenneth Eathridge -- all soldiers who had served with Shields in Iraq.

The arrest affidavit said Bastien told detectives that he, Bressler, Eathridge and Shields were at several bars in Colorado Springs on Nov. 30 celebrating Shields' birthday.

According to the affidavit, while at the Rum Bay nightclub, Bastien described how he, Bressler and Eastridge had made plans to rob some people or businesses for money.

The four then left the bar, and got lost driving around, Bastien said in the affidavit. At least twice during the drive, the four got out to throw up.

It was during one of these "vomit breaks" that Bressler and Shields got into a fight but later "made up" and got back into the car, Bastien told police.

On the last stop, Bastien said all four got out of the car. According to the affidavit, "Bastien said that Eastridge then looked at him intensely and told him to get back into the car."

Bastien walked back toward the car, and then "he saw Louis Bressler shoot Kevin Shields," the affidavit stated.

"Bressler then walked over to where Kevin Shields was lying, stood over him, and shot him four more times," Bastien said in the affidavit.

Bressler then rifled through Shields pockets, and then got back into the car and the three drove away.

According to the affidavit, Bastien thought Bressler shot Shields, "probably because they thought [Shields] might tell someone about their plans to rob some businesses."

Gun Linked To Previous Shooting

Police said the gun used to shoot Shields, a .38 caliber revolver, was similar to one used in the to kill James in August.

According to court documents, when confronted with this case, "Bastien then admitted to being a part of Robert James' death."

Bastien said he and Bressler picked up James from an apartment complex near Fort Carson even though they didn't know him, documents said. The three drove to the Bank at Broadmoor and told James to get out of the car and get cash.

They then ordered James to give them all his money, Bastien said.

James gave away his money and Bastien climbed back in the car, leaving Bressler outside with James, Bastien said.

Then "Bastien saw Bressler shoot Robert James," the documents said, using the same gun used to shoot Shields.

Bastien went on to tell police that he "used the money to buy marijuana, which they smoked later that morning."

Bastien , Bressler and Eathridge were arrested on Dec 10.

Investigation Into Shooting Of Civilians

After he had been arrested, Bastien then claimed to have witnessed potential crimes, which occurred in Iraq.

Bastien said he and Eathridge were part of a caravan of military vehicles in Baghdad.

"Bastien said while he drove, Mr. Eastridge would shoot at Iraqi civilians who happened to be along the street," court documents stated. "Bastien said that he knows that an Iraqi civilian was struck on at least one occasion."

Eastridge allegedly used stolen AK-47s because the sound is very distinctive. Bastien told police if there were any questions when the shootings were heard, "they could claim they were taking hostile fire."
